Man Who Found Caylee Anthony Body Tipped Police Months Ago

As the skeletal remains of a child found last week are confirmed to be those of missing toddler Caylee Anthony, more details about the man who found them have emerged.

Authorities announced Friday that the remains were positively identified as Caylee through a DNA match. Medical examiner Jan Garavaglia said the cause of death was homicide, but said it is still unclear how the toddler died. Toxicology tests are being conducted.

Caylee’s body was found a half a mile from her grandparents home last Thursday by a meter reader. Police have now revealed that the man called police multiple times four months ago directing them to the site where the body was found.  Orange County Sheriff’s Department Commander Angelo Nieves said investigators are determining if the tips on August 11 through the 13 were properly followed up.

In the calls, the meter reader told authorities that he saw a gray bag on the side of the road. A deputy responded to the call but found nothing. Caylee’s skull was found in a trash bag. Nieves added that the man is “not a suspect” but “is a credible witness.”

Caylee, 3, has been missing since June. Her mother Casey Anthony, 22, waited a month to report her disappearance. She is currently being held in a Florida prison on first-degree murder charges in Caylee’s disappearance. Anthony could face life in prison if convicted. Prosecutors have said that they will not seek the death penalty.
