Official Death Toll in Japan Tsunami Tops 10,000

The National Police Agency put the official death toll in the March 11 earthquake and tsunami at over 10,000 on Saturday. The agency said 10,151 bodies have been recovered, but the toll is expected to rise with more than 17,000 people still missing. At least 2,000 of the dead came from the hard hit Miyagi prefecture. About 250,000 people remain in evacuation centers.

Meanwhile, a 6.8 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar last week left at least 75 people dead and 111 others injured. State-run radio reported at least 390 hours, 14 Buddhist monasteries and 9 government buildings were damaged.

The epicenter was located about 70 miles from Chiang Rai, Thailand and 364 miles from Myanmar’s capital of Rangoon. The tremor was felt as far away as Bangkok, which is located about 480 miles from the epicenter. Minor damage was reported in Thailand.
