Amy Adams to play Lois Lane in Superman: Man of Steel

Amy Adams will portray Lois Lane in the new 'Superman' movie.

The Oscar-nominated actress has signed up to star alongside Henry Cavill in 'Superman: Man of Steel', playing the hero's love interest.

Director Zack Snyder told the Los Angeles Times newspaper: "There was a big, giant search for Lois. For us it was a big thing and obviously a really important role.

"We did a lot of auditioning but we had this meeting with Amy Adams and after that I just felt she was perfect for it."

Although Snyder wouldn't elaborate on how much Lois would be in the film, he said she forms an important part of his vision for Superman.

He said: "It goes back to what I've said about Superman and making him really understandable for today. What's important to us is making him relevant and real and making him empathetic to today's audience so that we understand the decisions he makes. That applies to Lois as well. She has to be in the same universe as him in tone and substance."

As well as Amy and British star Henry, Kevin Costner and Diane Lane have also signed up for the movie to play Superman's adoptive parents Jonathan and Martha Kent.

The last movie 'Superman Returns' in 2006 starred Brandon Routh as the Man of Steel and Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane.
