A tsunami advisory was issued and later called off for northeast Japan Monday morning after a strong 6.5 earthquake struck off the coast about 70 miles east of Sendai. The tremor was 3.7 miles deep. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued the tsunami advisory shortly after the jolt at 7:24 a.m. A 1.6 foot tall wave was predicted.
The tremor was one of many aftershocks that have struck the area since the 9.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami on March 11. Over the weekend officials put the official death toll at 10,151. The number of dead is expected to rise as more than 17,000 people remain unaccounted for. Search teams continue to dig through rubble looking for the missing. About 250,000 people remain in evacuation centers.
