China to Send Warships to Gulf of Aden to Protect Merchant Ships from Somali Pirates

China has announced they will send a pair of navy destroyers and a supply ship to the waters off the coast of Somalia in an attempt to protect merchant ships from pirate attacks in the tumultuous waters of the Gulf of Aden.

The ships are expected to leave the Chinese port of Sanya on December 26.

A recent UN resolution approved the use of “any means necessary” to protect and pursue pirate attacks in the waters off Somalia. China has said the main purpose of sending the vessels was to protect Chinese ships but they would also be willing to work with other protection ships to halt pirate attacks.

China will join the EU, U.S., India, Iran, Malaysia and Russia in establishing a protective presence in the violent waters off Somalia.
