U.S. Military Presence in Afghanistan Could Nearly Double in 2009

While the United States has announced plans to continue scaling back their efforts in Iraq their military presence in Afghanistan could nearly double in 2009 as the chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mike Mullen announced plans to send up to 30,000 troops to the country.

Adm. Mullen stated the troop increase could be “some 20 to 30,000” troops but deployment time would likely be shortened for those serving in Afghanistan.

It is believed the majority of the troop increase would be stationed in southern Afghanistan where the level of violence from insurgents has continued to grow.

The U.S. already plans on sending an additional 3,000 troops to Afghanistan in January and the reinforcements identified by Mullen could arrive as early as the spring but no later than the summer.
