Members
of Iraqi’s parliament have rejected a draft law that would have allowed
military troops from the UK, Australia, Romania and other countries to remain
in Iraq after 2008.
The
current UN mandate which stipulates the legal status of the troops in Iraq is
set to expire on Dec. 31 but an effort to extend their stay has been blocked by
parliament by a vote of 80 to 64.
While
the vote was based on the UN mandate the 140,000 U.S. troops currently in Iraq
are not affected by the decision as a separate deal struck between the two
countries has already stipulated they could stay through 2011.
Many
members of parliament hailed the decision as a “great national achievement” and
saw it as a step towards creating further independence from foreign influences.
The
rejected draft law will now be sent back to the cabinet for amendment. Even if the
UN mandate date remains intact the government could orchestrate individual
deals with countries to remain much like they did with the U.S.
