Illinois Man Awarded Large Settlement after Contracting Mesothelioma

by Daun Lee

A Bloomington, Illinois court awarded a 59 year old man who contracted the mesothelioma 90 million dollars in compensatory damages. The plaintiff Charles Gillenwater worked as a pipe-fitter in the 70’s where he was exposed to the carcinogen asbestos at various sites where he worked during that time. The suit alleged that four different companies, Honeywell International Inc., Pneumo Abex, Owens-Illinois Inc. and John Crane Inc. failed to warn the plaintiff of the dangers of asbestos exposure. Individuals along with mesothelioma attorneys who contract mesothelioma can seek compensation for their medical care costs and suffering from companies that used asbestos.

Mesothelioma is an incurable cancer that affects the linings of internal organs including the heart, lungs and digestive system. Mesothelioma takes up to forty years to manifest in the body so people exposed to asbestos may not be aware they are ill until the cancer has grown. Experienced mesothelioma lawyers will fight for victims of this tragic disease in courts to obtain just compensation. Companies who used the asbestos mineral haven’t always been forthright with the public regarding the dangers of asbestos exposure.

Many people exposed to asbestos while working in the construction fields and on naval ships are beginning to become afflicted with mesothelioma. In spite of being prohibited from use, asbestos is still present in buildings throughout the US. Those exposed to asbestos who contract mesothelioma along with mesothelioma attorneys can ask for compensation to help them pay for associated medical costs.
