Nikolai
Valuev (50-1, 34 KOs) hardly threw a punch and inflicted no damage to the challenger
Evander Holyfield (42-10-2, 27 KOs) yet the judges kept the WBA heavyweight
belt around the waist of the seven-foot Russian after 12 rounds.
The
decision was met by a chorus of boos from those attending the fight in Zurich,
Switzerland as Holyfield was clearly the crowd favorite and appeared to have
done enough to capture a share of the heavyweight championship for the fifth time
in his career.
Holyfield,
46, looked as if he had clearly won enough rounds to take the belt yet his
35-year-old opponent took the decision.
Judges
scored the fight 114-114, 116-112 to Valuev and 115-114 to Valuev.
