Riot Police Break Up Russian Protest in Vladivostok

A protest rally demonstrating against a new tax on imported cars was forcefully broken up by Russian riot police in Vladivostok resulting in several dozen arrests and injuries.

According to reports about 500 protesters had rallied in the city’s main square carrying signs and shouting slogans when the police acted. Police said they ordered the crowd to disperse before the event turned physical.

Protesters in Vladivostok and several other Russian cities have expressed outrage over a recent law that would tax imported cars. Vladivostok’s economy depends heavily on the importing of Japanese cars and with the new tax prices on the autos could rise nearly 50 percent.

The tax is meant to aid the struggling domestic auto industry in Russia.
