Alcohol Is No. 1 Most Dangerous Drug

Liquor has the dubious distinction of being the most dangerous drug, according to a new study.

Put away the foam fingers and the streamers. This isn’t a win anyone will be celebrating. A new study by London’s Imperial College chair of neuropsychopharmacology (try saying that three times fast!) has named alcohol the most dangerous drug, with heroin and cocaine trailing only slightly behind. Tobacco took the second place honors as most dangerous legal drug, while, surprisingly, marijuana, ecstasy and even mushrooms are seen as respectively safer.

The study, titled Drug Harms In the UK and published in the prestigious Lancet, outlines a convincing case for the controversial claim that alcohol is the most dangerous drug -- illegal or legal -- in the world today.

Alcohol Effects

The study examined 20 different drugs, including tobacco, marijuana, methamphetamine, ecstasy, cocaine, heroin and alcohol.  Each drug was given a rating based on its power to cause various problems ranging from health issues, injuries, dependency and mental impairment to financial harm such as a job loss and relationship loss. Each drug was also rated on societal problems it caused, from crime and local decay to family problems and the economic cost to society.

While heroin and crack cocaine proved to be the most dangerous drugs to individuals, when combined with the societal impact, alcohol came out ahead as the world's most dangerous drug. And in most societies, alcohol, unlike crack and heroin, is perfectly legal for adults to consume. In fact, it’s their legality that increases their harmfulness, the study author claims.
