The New York Knicks ended a 6-game losing streak on Monday by defeating the Orlando Magic 113-106. Carmelo Anthony, who joined the Knicks on February 21st, had called the game a must-win, saying that the team had to win the game in order to boost their own morale.
Anthony, incidentally, had his best game since joining the team, leading his team in points and rebounds, with 39 and 10 respectively.
"I said that. That's how I felt, that's how we felt as a team, that it was a must win for us," said Anthony. "We, as a team, backed it up tonight."
Amar'e Stoudemire also played an important role in the game, contributing 20 points and 2 steals.
"Carmelo helped, he was on fire out there," said Stoudemire. "They had no answer for him, and then we played great defensively, we got after it, chasing down loose balls, really, really showing the effort to want to win and it showed tonight."
The Knicks effort was facilitated by Dwight Howard's fouling out of the game during overtime with his NBA-leading 17th technical foul.
"There's nothing you can do about it now. I just went for the rebound," said Howard, who tossed the ball into the backcourt after he was called for his sixth foul during a rebound. "I think that should have been a delay of game. Every time you roll the ball down the court, they usually call a delay of game, but it's cool, you know. I'll try to get it rescinded. If not, I'll just have to continue to play."
The victory represented the Knicks' second win in the last 11 games. It also represented the Magic's third loss in sixteen games and the end of a five-game win streak.
