Philip Rivers threw for 287 yards and four touchdowns, Vincent Jackson had 111 yards receiving, LaDainian Tomlinson added 90 yards on the ground and the San Diego Chargers (7-8) defense forced three turnovers in a 41-24 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9-6) on Sunday to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Both teams traded touchdowns in the first quarter as Rivers hit Brandon Manumaleuna on an 11-yard TD pass and B.J. Askew answered for the Bucs on a one-yard run.
Rivers put the Chargers back in front with a 15-yard touchdown toss to Antonio Gates and Nate Kaeding pushed the Chargers advantage to 17-7 with a 28-yard field goal. Matt Bryant connected from 49-yards out with 17 seconds left in the half and it looked like Tampa would head into halftime trailing by seven but Kaeding booted a 59-yard field goal as time expired and the San Diego lead was pushed back to ten, 20-10.
Tampa rallied in the third quarter as Jeff Garcia scored on a 7-yard keeper and then Garcia found Antonio Bryant on a 71-yard touchdown pass and the Bucs had their first lead of the game at 24-20 and looked to be in control of the game.
That control slipped through their fingers in the final frame though as Philips hit Gates on a 5-yard TD toss in the opening seconds and then he found Darren Sproles on a 32-yard touchdown pass to push the lead to 34-24 with 7:18 on the clock. Antoine Cason then put the game away when he picked off Garcia and went 59 yards for a touchdown.
San Diego now needs the Denver Broncos to lose to the Buffalo Bills to keep their playoff hopes alive while the Tampa Bay Bucs will need help in their pursuit of an NFC playoff berth as they dropped their third straight game and first at home this season.
