CBS News and reported that plutonium was found in soil samples near the nuclear plant, Fukushima, which has been struggling to contain radiating since the March 12 tsunami. First there was iodine and cesium and now plutonium could leak into the ocean and carry the radioactive material around the world and infect the seafood people consume according to an advisor for the Russia’s state nuclear monopoly Rosatom, Vladamir Kuznetsov. The representatives for TEPCO, the company that owns the reactor, states that the people aren’t in any danger from the leaking plutonium and has continued to downplay the severity of the crisis.
Plutonium is extremely radioactive element that takes thousands of years to dissipate once in the soil and once in breathed in can cause cancer as it takes decades to leave the body, according to CBS news. Japan’s nuclear problems seem to be worsening and people from there may decide it’s safer to move somewhere else.
