NFL Scores Week 16: Miami Dolphins Control Playoff Destiny with Win Over Kansas City Chiefs

Chad Pennington was 26/34 passing for 235 yards and three touchdowns, Anthony Fassano had a pair of TD receptions and the Miami Dolphins (10-5) defense forced four turnovers to beat the Kansas City Chiefs (2-13) 38-31 on Sunday and now control their destiny in the AFC playoff chase.

The Dolphins jumped to a 10-0 lead in the opening frame as Ted Ginn Jr. scored on a 31-yard run and Dan Carpenter kicked a 34-yard field goal. Tyler Thigpen responded for the Chiefs with a 33-yard touchdown pass to Devard Darling and then found Tony Gonzalez on an 8-yard TD toss early in the second and K.C. was in front 14-10.

Following the Gonzalez TD the Dolphins turned to Pennington who hit David Martin on an 11-yard touchdown to give Miami a 17-14 advantage. The lead went back to the Chiefs when Larry Johnson scored on a 2-yard run but Pennington answered once more with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Fassano with 6:12 left in the half to give Miami the 24-21 lead. Kansas City didn’t pack it in though as Thigpen found the endzone on an 8-yard keeper and the Chiefs carried a 28-24 lead into the break.

Kansas City pushed their advantage to 31-24 in the third quarter when Connor Barth was good from 27-yards out but the Dolphins tied the game on a 4-yard touchdown run from Ricky Williams and the score remained locked at 31-31 heading into the fourth.

Late in the final frame Pennington found Fassano on a 14-yard toss for the 38-31 lead and the Dolphins defense shut the Chiefs down to seal the win.

The win as the fourth straight for the Dolphins who can now win the AFC East and earn a spot in the playoffs with a  victory over the New York Jets next week.
