International Field Expected for U.S. Putting Championship

An international field of golfers is expected for the 2011 U.S. Putting Tour Championship this September in Carlsbad, California. Golfers and club professionals from the Caribbean, Australia, Canada, Europe and Asia have indicated their interest in the inaugural championship, which features a $10,000 first prize.

"The USPT Championship welcomes golfers from anywhere in the world," said U.S. Putting Tour president, Jim Hartley. "Just like the U.S. Open and other major golf tournaments, we want American golfers to pit their skills against golfers from other countries."

Golfers can reach the USPT Championship either by entering the September tournament directly or by winning an official qualifying event. Hartley explained the putting tournaments can be hosted by local golf courses, men's and ladies' clubs, charities and entrepreneurs. PGA club professionals who hold qualifying events can gain direct access to the championship.

The putting championship is open to golf professionals and amateur golfers, both of which will compete for the title of America's Best Putter, as well as the USPT Championship trophy. In lieu of a cash prize, amateurs will compete for merchandise prizes in accordance with the USGA's rules on Amateur Status.

The putting championship will take place over seven days at The Crossings, the newest course in Carlsbad, which is also home to several leading golf equipment companies. Golfers will play three rounds and can choose to play their first round on any of the tournament's first three days.

The U.S. Putting Tour was founded in 2010. Its events and the championship are open to everyone age 13 and older. Men and women compete together in these non-handicapped tournaments. More information is available at the U.S. Putting Tour website and by emailing info@usputtingtour.com.
