NFL Scores Week 16: New York Giants Secure Home Field Throughout Playoffs with OT Win Over Carolina Panthers

Derrick Ward carried the ball 15 times and rushed for 215 yards, Brandon Jacobs collected 87 yards rushing and three touchdowns and Eli Manning threw for 181 yards and a TD as the New York Giants (12-3) knocked off the Carolina Panthers (11-4) 34-28 on Sunday night to lock up the number one seed in the NFC playoffs and secure home-field advantage throughout.

John Carney gave the Giants the early lead 3-0 with a 32-yard field goal but the Panthers answered with a 13 yard touchdown run from DeAngelo Williams for the 7-3 advantage. That lead held into the second but Jacobs restored the Giants lead with a 2-yard run.

Carolina then looked to grab control of the game as Williams scored a pair of TDs on runs of 5-yards and a one-yarder to give the Panthers a 21-10 lead before Carney made it 21-13 with a 35-yard field goal just before the half.

The third quarter provided little offense but Manning managed to get the Giants in the endzone in the final minute when he hit Kevin Boss on a 4-yard toss to pull New York to within 21-20. Carolina answered early in the fourth though as Williams scored his fourth TD of the game on a 30-yard run that provided an eight-point cushion.

New York managed to put together a game-tying drive with just over three minutes left in the game when Jacobs found the endzone on a one-yard run and then Manning hit Domenik Hixon on the two-point conversion. Carolina had a shot at winning the game at the end of regulation but John Kasay’s field goal attempt sailed wide left and the game went to overtime.

On New York’s second possession Ward rattled off a pair of huge runs that set up Jacobs one-yard touchdown run to win the game and lock up the number one seed in the NFC.
