Thailand’s
king Bhumibol Adulyadej has sworn in a new cabinet and in the process appealed
for peace and order to be restored to the country following months of unrest
and protests.
Addressing
the newly sworn in cabinet Abdulyadej, 81, stated, “If you help each other you
can give the country peace and order, and make the country get through the
current situation.”
While
the new cabinet is a sign of hope for a country that has been dealing with uncertainty
several appointments made by new Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva were met with
skepticism.
Chief
among his controversial appointments was new foreign minister Kasit Piromya who
was an outspoken critic of the former government and openly supported the protests
and demonstrations that left the country’s political scene paralyzed.
Vejjajiva
was also criticized for his appointments of ministers that represented factions
who broke from the previous government and paved the way for his selection as
new PM last month.
