Trial Date Set for Iraqi Journalist who Threw Shoes at President George Bush

Muntadar al-Zaidi, the Iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at U.S. President George Bush during a news conference in Baghdad, will go on trial Dec. 31 where he stands accused of “aggression against a foreign head of state.”

al-Zaidi, 28, stood up in the middle of the Dec.14 news conference, shouted insults at Bush and then hurled his shoes at the leader before being tackled by security guards and hauled off to jail.

According to the investigating judge Dhiya al-Kenani, “the investigation phase is over and the case has been transferred to the Central Criminal Court.” The journalist could now be facing between five and 15 years for the offense.

The day after al-Zaidi was placed in detention several Iraqis took to the streets in protest and demanded his release. While the crimes he is accused of carry a lengthy prison sentence many believe he could be tried on a lesser charge of attempted aggression.
