Members
of Russia’s Federation Council have unanimously voted to extend the presidential
term limit from four to six years, opening the door to the possibility that
Prime Minister Vladimir Putin could return to office in the near future.
At
least two-thirds of the Federation Council needed to approve the bill
introduced by current President Dmitry Medvedev and that was easily achieved
when all present backed the bill.
The
bill will now go before Medvedev and once signed it will go into law but won’t
be effective until the next presidential election.
Most
believe the decision to extend the presidential term limit was made in an
effort to place Putin back in office. He was forced to step down from the
presidency after his second term ended but was quickly placed in the role of
prime minister when Medvedev won the presidential election.
According
to the bill Putin could now run for the presidency after Medvedev’s first term
and potentially serve two six-year terms if elected.
