British police are reportedly worried that anarchist militants could try to disrupt the royal wedding.
Prince William will marry his longtime love Kate Middleton at London's Westminster Abbey on April 29 with the whole country being given a national holiday to celebrate the occasion but after rioters vandalised shops and landmarks during protests in the city on Saturday (26.03.11), police now fear the day could be ruined.
Commander Bob Broadhurst, the head of public order for the Metropolitan Police, said: "Saturday reinforced the fact that there does appear to be an appetite out there to endorse violence. The concern for me is that they do what they did ... in central London and divert resources away from my security plan and take our eye off the ball security wise."
However he warned those deliberately targeting" the royal event that the force would have "different powers" on the day of the wedding, including the ability to close roads and stop-and-search powers.
The weekend's rally against Government cuts became violent when masked anarchists brought chaos to Oxford Street and Piccadilly, the capital's busiest shopping streets, where they started fires, smashed their way into banks and shops, including department store Fortnum and Mason and Topshop, and attacked the Ritz hotel.
More than 200 people were arrested and 31 police officers were injured, including 11 who were taken to hospital.
