Belgium’s
King Albert II has accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Yves Leterme and
his government but has asked him to remain in office in a caretaker capacity
while a new prime minister is sought.
Leterme
offered his resignation on Friday following frustration with the handling of the
government’s financial stake in the troubled bank Fortis. The government had
hopes to sell its stake in the bank but the move was blocked by a judge who
determined the other shareholders should have a say in the decision.
It
was later determined that the government had attempted to sway the court ruling
in order to push the sale forward and that has through the government into the middle
of controversy.
Leterme
has only held office for nine months but this was the second time he offered
his resignation.
