Flooding and mudslides in southern Thailand have left at least 21 people dead. Flash floods have affected nearly 1 million people in eight provinces and stranded thousands of tourists. As of Sunday natural disaster zones had been declared in 34 districts. The airports in Koh Samui, Nakhon Si Thammarat and Surat Thani have been closed.
Officials estimated $10 million in damage so far, but the director-general of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation warned the full extent of damage is still unknown. More rain is forecast for the next several days. Authorities warned more mudslides are possible.
Floods in Thailand last year killed more than 220 people.
