Infected IV Bags Used in Alabama Hospitals

by Daun Lee

Investigations are being conducted in Alabama to determine if infected IV bags caused the death of nine patients and made 10 others ill, according to the New York Times. The IV bags contained a nutritional supplement and were found to be infected Serratia marcescens. Alabama’s health officer, Dr. Donald E Williamson said that it is uncertain whether the bacteria caused the deaths or their existing illnesses. The Birmingham pharmacy which distributed the tainted bags has ceased their release to hospitals in the area. Six different hospitals in Alabama received the IV bags, as reported in the New York Times.

Since the investigations are pending, there is no evidence the infected IV bags caused patients harm. However there are instances where people are injured or killed by the negligence of their doctors or medications they receive. The injured amass a great deal of medical costs and can suffer a lot of pain. For victims of medical malpractice, an accident attorney can work for them to recoup the costs of recovery and the time missed from their jobs.

There are times when death is caused by medical malpractice and carelessness of medical professionals should be addressed with assistance of an accident lawyer to prevent harm to others. If the deceased leaves behind a family that has no other means of support they face many economic troubles, but an accident attorney can fight to gain fair compensation for them to alleviate their worries and grief.
