The
United Nations has extended its mandate to station peacekeeping forces in the
troubled Democratic Republic of Congo in an effort to protect civilians from the
violence waged between government troops and rebels.
According
to the new mandate UN forces will remain in the DR Congo for another year and
will include the deployment of more than 22,000 soldiers and police as well as
observers.
DR
Congo has been mired in constant battles between government troops and rebel
groups in the eastern region of the country. Much of the violence has been
between rebel leader Gen. Laurent Nkunda and his Tutsi minority and government
militias.
That
violence has left more than a quarter-million civilians homeless as they have
been forced to flee from constant battles as well as looting.
The
Tutsi community has been involved in several battles with Hutus who fled Rwanda
after the 1994 genocide ended and they were forced from power.
