The
Guinea army has claimed they now have control of the countries government
following the death of President Lansana Conte on Monday.
While
the army declares control several ministers in Conte’s government have stated
otherwise, declaring things were operating as they should.
Conte,
74, passed away on Monday after a long illness and shortly after his death was
announced the army declared they had taken control and they had set up a body
called the National Council for Democracy and Development.
The
army stated “As of today, the constitution is suspended as well as political
and union activity. The government and the institutions of the republic have
been dissolved.”
News
of the dissolution of the government was condemned by the African Union as
peace and security commissioner Ramtane Lamamra was quoted by the BBC as
saying, “This is a blatant violation of the Guinean constitution and a
violation of African legality."
