Zimbabwe
President Robert Mugabe has dismissed calls from the West demanding he step
down, calling the U.S. and UK “stupid and foolish” for making the statements.
Mugabe
has faced intense scrutiny from Western countries following a failed
power-sharing deal that was to bring his ZANU-PF party into a coalition
government with Movement for Democratic Change leader Morgan Tsvangirai.
That
power-sharing deal has crumbled as Mugabe has refused to make the concessions
that had been agreed upon and that has resulted in several countries pulling
aid from the country while he remains in power.
Mugabe
attacked U.S. President George Bush for his stance on Zimbabwe calling his
criticisms the ‘last kicks of a dying horse.”
While
Mugabe has criticized Bush the UK has backed the U.S. position declaring Mugabe
was “an absolute impossible obstacle.”
Mugabe
has held power since Zimbabwe gained independence in 1980. He lost the presidential
election earlier this year but it was determined Tsvangirai had not secured a
large enough majority and a second round of voting was ordered. Tsvangirai
dropped out of the race with less than a week before the vote after calling the
elections flawed and accusing Mugabe of using intimidation and violence to keep
MDC supporters from the polls.
For
months following the election, which Mugabe won unopposed, South Africa’s
former president Thabo Mbeki held power-sharing talks and had an agreement in
place but the deal has never been instituted in large part to Mugabe’s refusal
to adhere to the conditions.
