New Zealand and Fiji Expel Each Other’s Top Diplomats in Political Tit-for-Tat

New Zealand’s frustration with the political scene in neighboring Fiji has resulted in both countries expelling the other’s top diplomat.

New Zealand’s high commissioner in Fiji will now leave while Fiji’s high commissioner in New Zealand will now be forced to return home.

The exchange comes as New Zealand continues to call for Fiji to return to democracy, a move that has been stalled by Fiji’s military leader Frank Bainimarama.

Bainimarama seized power in Fiji two years ago and has said he would institute democratic elections but those plans have been delayed on numerous occasions. He has said he wants to reform election laws before an election is held.

While the expulsion of the diplomats is tied to the political landscape of Fiji the decisions were sparked by New Zealand’s refusal to issue a student visa to the son of a senior Fijian official.
