German police thwarted a bomb attack near a Dortmund soccer stadium after receiving anonymous tips about the attack. The tips led to the arrest of an unidentified 25-year-old German man. The suspect told authorities about three explosive devices planted outside the Borussia Dortmund soccer club and additional bombs in his Dortmund apartment.
The Federal Crime Office, also known as BKA, was sent to the stadium to investigate and discovered the bombs. The explosives were diffused. Three other explosive devices and large amounts of chemicals were found in the man’s apartment.
"A forensic investigation is being carried out to ascertain whether or not the suspect objects were in fact explosives as well as to identify the possible uses of chemicals that were found," the BKA said in a statement. "According to early assessments, there was no acute danger to the public."
The suspect has not been linked to any terrorist organizations. The Interior Ministry said is appears the man was “acting on his own with a criminal motivation.”
