The
#9 Boise State Broncos (12-0) have plenty to play for on Tuesday night when
they face the #11 TCU Horned Frogs (10-2) in the San Diego County Credit Union
Poinsettia Bowl at Qualcomm Stadium. Boise State finished the regular season
unblemished, one of only two teams to accomplish the feat, yet was shunned by the
BCS bowl committee. TCU dropped just two games this year, one of them to the Utah
Utes (the team that completed the season undefeated) and the #1 Oklahoma
Sooners (the team that will be playing for the BCS National Championship
against the Florida Gators on Jan. 8).
Boise
State would like nothing more than to finish the year out perfect and show the
BCS they need some changes but they face a TCU squad that features one of the most
prolific offense in the country and has an underrated defense that held the Sooners
to 35 points, their lowest point total all year (the Texas Longhorns beat the Sooners
45-35 to match that mark).
The
Broncos have averaged 39.4 points per game while rolling up 456.8 yards per
contest. They have been led by freshman quarterback Kellen Moore who has
averaged 273.3 yards per game while hitting 70% of his passes (only Colt McCoy,
Chase Daniel and Graham Harrell had higher percentages).
On
the ground the Broncos have relied on the senior leadership of Ian Johnson who
guided the Broncos to their last undefeated season (2006) and improbable
victory over the Oklahoma Sooners in the Fiesta Bowl. While Johnson doesn’t
propel the offense he has been reliable, collecting 12 touchdowns on the ground
while averaging just over 5-yards per carry.
Both
Moore and Johnson will have their work cut out for them on Tuesday night as
they face a TCU defense that is ranked second in the country, just behind the USC
Trojans. The Horned Frogs have allowed an average of 10.9 points per game, only
the Sooners scored more than 14 points against them this year. They held a Utah
team that averages 37.4 points to 13, an Oklahoma team that averages 54 points
to 35 and a BYU team that averages 34.2 points to 7.
That
defense is anchored by Jerry Hughes who leads the nation with 14 sacks. While
Hughes provides the Horned Frogs with a legitimate pass rusher it is their
rushing defense that has made TCU. They are tops in the nation allowing just
48.67 yards per game, nearly 30 yards better than #2 Texas.
Kickoff
for the Poinsettia Bowl is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. ET.
