Mark
Teixeira and the New York Yankees have reached an agreement on an eight-year deal
that would pay the first baseman $180 million, giving the Bronx Bombers a third
prized free-agent in a busy offseason.
Teixeira
had been courted by the Los Angeles Angels, Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles
and Washington Nationals but all four clubs reportedly dropped out of the running
after hearing what kind of numbers he was seeking.
Tuesday’s
announcement of a preliminary deal adds another piece to the Yankees offseason
of excess as they had already signed CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett to deals that
totaled more than $243 million. Sabathia inked a seven-year deal worth $161
million while Burnett signed a five-year
deal worth $82.5 million.
