Drug Trials Fail for Experimental Lung Cancer Treatment

by Daun Lee

In phase III trials, Amgen Inc.’s experimental drug motesnab did not successfully prolong the life of participants; according to The Baltimore Sun. Motesnab was one of three drugs Amgen was testing for late stage cancer sufferers and was used on non-small cell lung cancer. In spite of poor results in earlier, Amgen and Takeda Pharmaceutical Co. continued with trials but were disappointed with the results of the recent study. There is no word whether they will continue with trials using motesnab.

According to the National Cancer Institute, 157,000 people in America were killed by lung cancer last year. Non-small cell lung cancer is the most common type of lung cancer contracted by patients. The drugs used to treat non-small cell lung cancer are often used to treat mesothelioma. Mesothelioma causes cancer cells to grow in the lining of the lungs, called the mesothelium and the heart. Approximately 3,000 people per year contract mesothelioma and can obtain reparation if they employ a mesothelioma lawyer.

Mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos which was commonly used as a fire retardant, insulation and ceiling tiles for buildings. When the toxicity of asbestos was discovered funds were set up to offset the medical costs caused by the deadly disease and can be accessed with the assistance of a mesothelioma attorney. Even though asbestos is no longer being used, it still remains in buildings and people are still developing the fatal lung cancer, but a mesothelioma lawyer will work to get help for those victims.
