Less
than two weeks after being appointed Prime Minister of Somalia Mohamed Mahamud
Guled has announced he will resign from the position. Guled had replaced Nur
Hassan Hussein after he was dismissed by President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed
following continued disagreements concerning a peace deal with Islamist
militants.
Ahmed’s
appointment of Guled was seen as illegal by Somali MPs and the move was heavily
criticized by other African leaders who have since imposed sanctions on the president
and declared their support for Hussein.
Guled
explained that he chose to resign “so that I am not seen as a stumbling block
to the peace process which is going well now.” In notifying parliament of his
decision Guled said he wanted the government to remain intact and wanted the differences
that exist to be worked out.
Shortly
after Guled made his announcement Ahmed made a similar announcement, saying he
would hand in his resignation on Saturday.
