On Sunday night, Boston Celtics big man Shaquille O'Neal, who had missed more than two months due to an Achilles' tendon injury, suffered an injury is just six minutes of his first game back with the team. The injury sent O'Neal off the court, and he is out indefinitely.
"I don't know what to do, honestly," said Celtics coach Doc Rivers when asked if Shaq should be rested for the rest of the regular season. "My inclination is not, because he needs to play. We have to play at full-tilt in six or seven [games]."
Rivers says that he is optimistic about O'Neal being able to play soon because, according to the team doctors, the injury is not nearly as serious as Shaq's last one.
"The doctor thought it was very minor. Scary more than anything," said Rivers. "But we'll see."
Then again, Shaq's Achilles' tendon injury was also described as minor when it happened, and we all know how that turned out.
When asked directly how long he thinks Shaq will be out this time, Rivers said, "I don't know, is the answer. I don't think very long."
Glen "Big Baby" Davis seems particularly optimistic that Shaq will be fine.
"He'll be OK. Shaq's always going to be all right," said the Celtics vital bench player. "He doesn't get hurt. Shaq is invincible, man. That's what I believe in. He'll be back. Man of steel. That's what I've been believing since I was a little kid."
