The 6th Annual Sunscreen Film Festival will open on April 13th with a super-hero themed red carpet event, followed by a screening of Superhero Me at 7:00 and an after-party at the Dali Museum at 9:00. The Sunscreen Film Festival, which takes place annually in St. Petersburg, will celebrate independent films, and will unite the local filmmaking community through film screenings, educational workshops, and chic after parties.
Film fans and filmmakers will get the opportunity to network with other filmmakers and industry professionals, including actress Jennifer Aspen (Rodney, Glee) and filmmaker Jim Bigham (Dolphin Tale, For Once in My Life).
The red carpet event will include appearances by real-life superheroes, including local hero Master Legend. Master Legend appears in Superhero Me, and is based out of Winter Park, and received national recognition in 2008 by Rolling Stone Magazine for his independent good Samaritan work.
Superhero Me, the opening night film, can be described as a “real life Kick-Ass”, and follows the story of English documentarian Steve Sale’s quest to turn himself into a bona-fide superhero.
The Florida legislature recently passed a film incentive bill to draw more movie productions into the state of Florida, in order to boost the local job market and the economy. Because of this, the filmmaking community needs to be organized and prepared to handle the developing industry and influx of high profile productions, such as the Pinellas County shot Dolphin Tale, based on the Clearwater Marine Aquarium’s Winter the Dolphin. Festivals such as Sunscreen unite the community, and Sunscreen does this year-round by offering educational filmmaking and acting classes throughout the year.
