The weapon that was used in the fatal attack against a U.S. immigration agent in Mexico was determined to have originated in the United States.
Agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) arrested three men in a Dallas suburb on Monday that were connected to the purchase of weapons that were smuggled into Mexico.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent Jaime Zapata was killed in Mexico last month while on a covert mission. Zapata and another agent that was injured were ambushed on a highway in San Luis Potosi by drug cartel members.
One of the weapons that were used in the attack was purchased by one of the arrestees in Texas.
"The weapon was used in the attack, it was fired at the location, but we don't know if one of those bullets struck or killed Zapata," said ATF spokesperson Tom Crowley.
Crowley did not mention what type of weapon it was.
