According to Telam news agency, a train collision in Argentina early Monday injured 70 people. The incident involved two Ferrobaires trains. Telam reports a passenger train traveling from Mar del Palta to Buenos Aires broke down after a fire broke out in the engine room. A backup engine train was sent as a replacement, but collided with the passenger train.
Buses traveling nearby picked up the uninjured passengers and took them to Buenos Aires. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals where most of them were released after treatment. At least 8 people remain hospitalized.
The cause of the crash is unclear. Bad communication may have been a factor, according to the district chief of police in Buenos Aires.
