Researchers from two separate universities in Virginia collaborated on a gene study that was recently published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, focusing on the genetics behind alcoholism.
The study focused on how genetics, along with everyday environmental issues, influence, among other things, dependence on alcohol. According to the study, the results indicate that there is no single, specific gene that is responsible for alcoholism. Instead, a variety of genes contribute a small amount in the predisposition of an individual towards potential challenges including alcoholism.
“One of the fascinating aspects of the addiction field is the vast amount of studies that are being conducted that are interrelated,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside
Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “Even better, the results of these studies, corroborate one another. This further shows us that we are on the right track in having a better understanding of the nature of addiction. Addiction isn’t based on just one factor. However, isolating one factor that contributes to an addiction can help us develop treatment modalities that address that factor, creating even greater long-term sobriety success.”
The researchers’ goal is to eventually understand the genes involved in a variety of disorders, along with the environmental influences that affect the potential for challenges in dealing with those disorders. Understanding and using this information will reduce the risks of those who are most susceptible.
