Alcohol Awareness Month calls attention to the abuse of alcohol problem

April declared Alcoholism Awareness month

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration has declared April as Alcohol Awareness Month. As a result, various organizations around the country have planned educational events that focus on the dangers of alcohol use among young people.

“When a branch of the US government designates a specific month to bring awareness to an issue, it’s always a good thing,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “Within our field, every month is alcohol awareness month, as we continually try to educate the public, specifically young people and their parents, about the dangers of alcohol consumption when young. Having a specific month set aside draws more attention to more people how deeply the abuse of alcohol affects society as a whole.”

The following statistics are associated with alcohol use:

• It is estimated that close to 76 million people worldwide suffer from some form of alcohol abuse related issues

• Within the United States, recent studies have shown that 53% of adults report that one or more close relatives have a drinking problem.

• In 2005, dependence on, and the abuse of, alcohol cost the United States approximately $220 billion, more than obesity or cancer.
