Israel Launches Air Strikes Across Gaza Strip, More Than 200 Dead

Israel has launched a massive air strike across the Gaza Strip, killing at least 200 Palestinians and wounding more than 700.

The strike was targeting security compounds and militant bases associated with the militant group Hamas and while the majority of those killed were Hamas members there were several women and children among the casualties.

F-16 bombers were sent in response to a recent spree of rocket and mortar attacks launched by Hamas into southern Israel, signaling an end to a six-month ceasefire agreement between the two sides. Leaders of Israel had warned that the attacks opened the door for a response and Defense Minister Ehud Barack declared, “There is a time for calm and a time for fighting, and now the time has come to fight.”

The United Nations has called for an immediate end to the attacks but Israel continued with the strikes as night fell and stated the operations “will continue, will be expanded, and will deepen if necessary.”

With the air strikes comes further speculation that Israel may be preparing to send ground troops into the area which would almost certainly ignite a lengthy battle between the two sides.
