Film Exposes Pervasiveness of Sexual Harassment in Egypt

By Daun Lee

According to CNN, a new film entitled “Cairo 678” focuses on the prevalence of sexual harassment endured by women on the streets of Cairo. The issue of sexual harassment in Egypt was brought to the awareness of the national media when reporter Lara Logan was attacked in Tahir Square while reporting on the uprisings in February. The film’s director, Mohamed Diab, was shocked to discover how common the harassment occurs and mad the film to raise awareness of the problem.

The Egyptian Center for Women’s Rights reported that 83 percent of Egyptian women and 98 percent of foreign women reported harassment of a sexual nature in 2008, as reported by CNN. Those are alarming statistics. In the US, the battle to eliminate sexual harassment has been a long and relatively successful endeavor, thanks to sexual harassment lawyers and the people who aren’t afraid to come forth.

In spite of the many strides made to eliminate sexual harassment, both domestically and abroad the problem still persists. In the workplace women and men are still subjected to sexually charged jokes, innuendos and unwanted advances. There is also the problem of asking for sexual favors in exchange for raises and promotions but a sexual harassment attorney will work to eradicate this from the job place. Standing up for your rights is not only the responsibility of the victim, but also the duty of a sexual harassment lawyer to make the job or school free of gender based hostility.
