The giant straw goat that has long been a symbol of the holiday season in Gavle, Sweden once again succumbed to vandals as it was set ablaze early Saturday morning, the 23rd time the goat has been torched since the 43-foot-high goat first made its appearance in 1966.
While the straw goat is not built to be burned down it has become a tradition for vandals to target the flammable figure despite measures to protect it.
Since 1966 only ten of the goats have survived the holiday season. Vandals torched the goat on New Year’s Eve in 1966 and thus began the tradition. In 1970 the straw goat was set aflame within six hours of its completion.
Last year the straw goat made it through the holiday season unscathed.
