Meineke Car Care Bowl: West Virginia Mountaineers Edge North Carolina Tar Heels, Pat White Makes History

Pat White was 26/32 passing for a career-high 332 yards and three touchdowns and added 55 yards on the ground, Alric Arnett had 93 yards receiving and a pair of TDs and Noel Devine added 61 yards rushing and a score as the West Virginia Mountaineers (9-4) edged the North Carolina Tar Heels (8-5) 31-30 in the Meineke Car Care Bowl on Saturday.

White made history with the win as he became the first quarterback in college football history to start and win four bowl games.

Both teams featured a tremendous offensive burst in the opening quarter as Devine put the Mountaineers on the board with an 18-yard touchdown run but the Tar Heels answered quickly as T.J. Yates hit Hakeem Nicks on a 73-yard touchdown pass to even the score.

Two minutes later the Mountaineers were back in the endzone as White found Arnett on a 44-yard touchdown toss but the Tar Heels responded 14 seconds later as Nicks was celebrating a 66-yard touchdown reception from Cooter Arnold. West Virginia capped the scoring in the opening frame with a White to Bradley Starks 35-yard touchdown pass and the Mountaineers carried a 21-14 advantage into the second quarter.

The Tar Heels defense came up big early in the second as they picked up a safety to pull NC to within 21-16 and then Yates and Nicks hooked up once more on a 25-yard touchdown and the ACC squad carried a 23-21 advantage into the half.

West Virginia managed to grab the lead back in the third quarter on a 25-yard field goal from Pat McAfee but the Tar Heels reclaimed the advantage as Yates scored on a 4-yard keeper for a 30-24 lead heading into the final quarter.

White gave the Mountaineers the lead once more midway through the fourth when he found Arnett on a 20-yard touchdown pass and it was the Mountaineers defense that did the rest. North Carolina had a shot in the closing minutes but Yates was picked off and White was able to take a knee to secure his fourth consecutive bowl game victory.

In the loss Hakeem Nicks had a huge game for the Tar Heels collecting 217 yards receiving and three TDs.
