Following Dec.7 presidential election in which neither Nana Akufo-Addo nor John Atta Mills managed to secure a large enough majority Ghana will once again take to the polls on Sunday for a presidential run-off.
Addo, a member of the ruling New Patriotic Party, edged Mills, of the National Democratic Congress, in the initial voting but the total was not enough to earn the presidency. Both candidates have been campaigning since the results were announced and each have accused the other of improprieties.
While Ghana has been recognized as a model for democratic elections in Africa accusations of fraud and ballot rigging have threatened the most recent election.
Each are looking to succeed President John Kufuor who has served the maximum two-term limit.
Kufuor has appealed for peace when the polls open on Sunday telling reporters, “we should all keep cool, go and vote, as a peaceful exercise, as a legitimate exercise.”
