DeAngelo Williams rushed for 178 yards, Jake Delhomme threw for 250 yards and a touchdown, Steve Smith had 134 yards receiving and John Kasay kicked a 42-yard field goal with one second left to prevent the Carolina Panthers (12-4) from a colossal collapse and beat the New Orleans Saints (8-8) 33-31 on Sunday and lock up the NFC South and the number two seed in the NFC playoffs.
Kasay provided the only points of the first quarter with a pair of field goals and after Garrett Hartley put the Saints on the board with a 21-yard field goal in the second Kasay answered with his third boot of the game to push the advantage to 9-3. Delhomme then put the Panthers in the endzone with an 8-yard toss to Muhsin Muhammad to extend the lead to 16-3 and on the ensuing kickoff Dante Wesley collected a fumble and went 12-yards for a touchdown and Carolina was in control 23-3.
New Orleans managed to stop the bleeding late in the first half as Drew Brees hit Marques Colston on a 26-yard touchdown pass to trim their deficit to 23-10 at the half but the Panthers got the points back in the third when Jonathan Stewart scored on a 2-yard run and the Saints were starring at a 30-10 hole heading into the fourth.
Brees put the Saints back in the endzone with a 7-yard pass to Robert Meachem and the hit Lance Moore on a 9-yard touchdown pass to bring New Orleans to within 30-24 with 5:33 left on the clock. The improbable comeback continued two minutes later as Brees found Moore on a 13-yard TD toss and the Saints had their first lead of the game 31-30 with 3:11 left in the game.
With the NFC South title on the line the Panthers put together a final drive and put Kasay in position for the game winner as his 42-yard field goal split the uprights to give Carolina the win and a first round bye in the playoffs.
