Michael Turned rushed for 208 yards and a touchdown, Jerious Norwood added 56 yards on the ground and two TDs as well as 192 yards on kick returns and the Atlanta Falcons (11-5) overcame three turnovers to beat the St. Louis Rams (2-14) 31-27 on Sunday to secure the number five seed in the NFC playoffs.
The Falcons were first on the board as Jason Elam put three-points up with a 39-yard field goal on Atlanta’s opening possession but Steven Jackson, who collected 161 rushing yards on the day, scored on a 4-yard run to give the Rams a 7-3 advantage heading into the second.
Turner put the Falcons back in front when he scored on a 9-yard run but with 32 seconds remaining in the half Marc Bulger found Donnie Avery on a 16-yard touchdown pass and it looked like the Rams would carry a 14-10 lead into the half. On the ensuing kickoff Norwood went 92-yards down to the 8-yard line and then with 11 seconds left on the clock Norwood scored on an 8-yard run and Atlanta was up 17-14 heading into the break.
Mat Ryan, who struggled on the day with two interceptions, gave the Falcons some breathing room early in the third when he hit Roddy White on an 18-yard touchdown pass for a 24-14 lead but the Rams climbed back with a Josh Brown field goal late in the third and then Jackson scored his second TD of the game on a 2-yard run early in the fourth.
Brown put the Rams back in front when he connected from 27-yards out but the Falcons answered and once again it was Norwood as he found a hole and went 45 yards for a touchdown to put Atlanta in front 31-27. The Falcons defense then stepped up and forced the Rams to turn the ball over on downs to secure the win.
Atlanta will now travel to face the Arizona Cardinals next week in the NFC playoffs.
