NFL Scores Week 17: San Diego Chargers Clinch AFC West After Pounding Denver Broncos

LaDainian Tomlinson rushed for 96 yards and three touchdowns, Philip Rivers was 15/20 passing for 207 yards and a pair of TDs and Darren Sproles added 115 yards on the ground and a score as the San Diego Chargers (8-8) completed an amazing turnaround to their season and pounded the Denver Broncos (8-8) 52-21 on Sunday night to clinch the AFC West and punch their ticket to the AFC playoffs.

The Chargers grabbed a 3-0 lead in the opening quarter as Nate Kaeding kicked a 28-yard field goal but the Broncos answered with a 26-yard touchdown run but the extra point failed and Denver was in front 6-3. With 2:52 left in the first quarter Tomlinson gave the Chargers the lead for good when he scored from a yard out.

Rivers pushed the San Diego lead to 17-6 early in the second quarter when he found Brandon Manumaleuna on a 12-yard toss and the Tomlinson continued the onslaught when he scored on a 4-yard run to give the Chargers a 24-6 lead at the half.

Denver made an effort to get back in the game as Bell scored on a 37-yard run on the Broncos opening possession of the second half but the Chargers countered with a Rivers 13-yard touchdown pass to Sproles and after a Jay Cutler interception Tomlinson was back in the endzone for the third time with a 14-yard run.

Cutler brought the Broncos to within 38-21 early in the fourth when he found Tony Scheffler on a 25-yard TD pass and then a two-point conversion. Once again the Chargers answered as Sproles scored on a  2-yard run to push eth advantage to 45-21 and then Jacob Hester hammered in a 4-yard touchdown run to cap the scoring.
