The
Ugandan army has accused rebels belonging to the Lord’s Resistance Army of a church
massacre in the Democratic Republic of Congo that left at least 45 people
hacked to death with that number reaching 100 according to other reports.
According
to officers of the Ugandan army the victims had gathered at a Catholic church
near the border of South Sudan on Dec. 26 when they were attacked by LRA
rebels.
Uganda
has joined forces with Sudan and DR Congo in an attempt to halt offensives launched
by the LRA and its leader Joseph Kony. Kony has refused to sign a peace deal
without an agreement that his top officials would avoid prosecution.
Witnesses
to the church massacre described the scene as “horrific” with bodies hacked
into pieces, many of them women and children. The LRA has denied carrying out the
attack but those at the church identified the rebels by their language and
their dreadlock hair style.
