UN Places Zimbabwe Cholera Deaths in Excess of 1,500

The cholera outbreak in Zimbabwe has continued to worsen and now the United Nations has said more than 1,500 people have died since August and those numbers could continue to grow as the country has done little to control or contain the outbreak.

Zimbabwe has been mired in political uncertainty as President Robert Mugabe continues his efforts to maintain absolute control despite a power-sharing agreement with Movement for Democratic Change leader Morgan Tsvangirai. The political landscape has taken its toll on all other areas of the country as Zimbabweans have been left with little or no public services.

A health sector that doesn’t have the medication to treat those suffering from cholera, a sanitation system that has collapsed and left sewage flowing in the streets and the absence of clean drinking water have all contributed to the rise in cholera cases and left little hope for a quick solution.

As the cholera outbreak continues to spread an estimated 50 percent of Zimbabweans have been left in dire need of food.

Mugabe has called the cholera outbreak as scare tactic introduced by the West to unseat him and has declared the problem arrested.
