The
AFC playoff picture wasn’t complete until the final game of the NFL regular
season was complete as the San Diego Chargers locked up the AFC West with a win
over the Denver Broncos and earlier in the day two of the other three playoff
spots were claimed with wins by the Baltimore Ravens and Miami Dolphins earned
them a postseason spot. Only the Indianapolis Colts knew they had a playoff
spot heading into Week 17.
Now
the Indianapolis Colts (12-4) will be traveling to take on the San Diego
Chargers (8-8) with kickoff set for 8:00 p.m. ET on Saturday. The Colts were
6-2 on the road this year while the Chargers were 5-3 at home.
Indy
is certainly the hottest team in the NFL with nine straight wins and everything
apparently clicking. Peyton Manning has returned to form and has been spreading
the ball to Reggie Wayne, Marvin Harrison and Dallas Clark while Joseph Addai and
Domonic Rhodes have been solid out of the backfield. Perhaps the most
impressive aspect of the Colts has been their defense which has played by the bend-but-don’t-break
philosophy all year and it has worked. During their nine-game run the Colts
beat five teams with a .500 record or better.
For
the Chargers, their unlikely AFC West crown is still settling after they
pounded the Broncos for their fourth straight win to turnaround a 4-8 record.
LaDainian Tomlinson has been the key to the offense and his play has been
sporadic but on Sunday he was dominant and the Chargers will almost certainly be
looking to him in Saturday’s game. Philip Rivers has also looked strong over the
past few weeks and he has had a lot of help from Vincent Jackson and Antonio
Gates who have been solid as wide-outs.
On
Sunday the Miami Dolphins (11-5) will host the Baltimore Ravens (11-5) with
kickoff set at 8:00 p.m. ET. The Dolphins were 5-3 at home during the regular
season while the Ravens posted a 5-3 mark on the road.
After
a 1-15 2007 NFL season the Dolphins shocked the league with a dramatic
turnaround and an AFC East title after knocking off the NY Jets on Sunday. After
starting the season off 0-2 and then 2-4 the Dolphins won nine of their last
ten games to earn their ticket to the postseason. Chad Pennington has been a
huge addition to the Dolphins and he has been the model of efficiency while he
has had help with great play from Ted Ginn Jr. and Anthony Fasano as well as
backfield help from Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams. As impressive as the Miami
turnaround has been they posted a 2-4 mark against teams with a winning
percentage and one of those losses was a 27-13 beating at the hands of the Ravens.
Baltimore
has once again been anchored by one of the best defenses in the NFL and it was
that defense that finished off the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday to lock up the
number six spot in the AFC playoffs. While Joe Flacco has been solid as a
rookie QB and Le’Ron McClain has been consistent in the backfield it has been the
defense that has brought the Ravens this far and they will be called upon to
shut down the Dolphins on Sunday to advance. Baltimore closed out the year with
five wins in their final six games and that included wins over the Eagles,
Redskins and Cowboys. Like the Dolphins the Ravens have struggled against teams
with a winning record posting a 3-5 mark against those clubs.
